Our HVAC decided to take a break over the weekend…that has had me thinking a lot about summer weather…thankfully it has not been too hot. But it has still been stressful and put a halt to any weekend plans. So this post has been top of mind for me this week.

Summer should feel like a deep exhale—a chance to enjoy longer days, warm breezes, and a bit of fun. But let’s be honest: it can also come with pressure to make every moment count. Between Pinterest-perfect plans and endless social expectations, it’s easy to slip from savoring the season to simply surviving it. That’s why I’ve put together a list of low-stress, joy-sparking ideas to help you celebrate summer in ways that feel good—not forced. Whether you’re looking for simple pleasures, moments of creativity, or ways to recharge, there’s something here for you.

🌿 1. Create a Summer Senses Ritual

Celebrate summer through your senses:

  • Sight: String up fairy lights or pick flowers for the table.
  • Sound: Make a playlist of summer-themed music or nature sounds.
  • Smell: Use a lemon or lavender candle.
  • Taste: Sip cold brew, make a fruity salad, or try a popsicle you loved as a kid.
  • Touch: Go barefoot in the grass or bring out linen sheets and soft fabrics.

📚 2. Start a “Summer Reading Life” Practice

Instead of a challenge, curate a seasonal reading ritual:

  • Set up a summer reading nook.
  • Read at golden hour.
  • Pair books with drinks (iced tea + cozy mystery, anyone?).
  • Try a “reading picnic” at your local park or backyard.

🎨 3. Make Something Just for Fun

Create without pressure:

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Watercolor postcards
  • Pressed flower bookmarks
  • Try a “junk journal” for summer memories or reflections

This is your permission to make something messy, weird, or unfinished. Celebrate creative freedom!

🍓 4. Indulge in Summer Nostalgia

Do something you loved as a kid:

  • Blow bubbles
  • Run through a sprinkler
  • Make s’mores
  • Watch old summer movies
  • Play a board game outside
Let yourself be playful. No productivity required.

🌕 5. Honor the Summer Solstice

Use the longest day of the year (around June 20–21) to:

  • Reflect on what’s “in full bloom” in your life
  • Light a candle or write an intention for the rest of the year
  • Take a mindful walk at sunrise or sunset
  • Do a solstice journaling prompt: What light do I want to carry forward?

🧺 6. Plan a Mini Seasonal Reset

Create a simple ritual to mark summer’s arrival:

  • Declutter one small space (your desk, your bag, your browser tabs)
  • Refresh your planner or journal
  • Make a “Summer Intention List” instead of a bucket list—focus on how you want to feel, not just what you want to do

🌻 7. Celebrate with Silly Holidays

Bring a little joy and humor into the mix:

  • June 21 – National Selfie Day (take a photo doing something joyful)
  • July 1 – International Joke Day
  • July 10 – Don’t Step on a Bee Day
  • August 8 – Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day (yes, it is real!)
These micro-celebrations invite creativity and play without big commitments.

💛 What Summer Celebration Doesn’t Have to Be

  • It doesn’t have to be busy.
  • It doesn’t have to involve travel.
  • It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s version of joy.
You can celebrate summer by being presentresting deeply, or reconnecting with your creativity.

Summer doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing—it can be a season of small wins, simple joys, and gentle rhythms. I’d love to hear from you: What’s one thing you’re doing to celebrate summer your way? Drop it in the comments or tag me on social (@jhopwood80) if you try something from the list. Let’s build a summer that feels light, meaningful, and just right—for each of us.
