During a training session called Beauty in Ambiguity, we were asked some profound questions: How do you want to be remembered? What do you want your impact to be? What are your values?
As I reflected on these questions, a thought crystallized in my mind:
“Be the unicorn—rare, serene, and graceful; but brave, stabby, and protective if needed!”

At first, it might seem like a whimsical response, but for me, it was a deeply personal expression of how I want to approach life and how I want to leave my mark on the world. In a time when ambiguity often feels overwhelming, the unicorn became a perfect metaphor for embodying beauty, resilience, and adaptability in the face of the unknown.
Why I Signed Up for Beauty in Ambiguity
As someone who has studied creativity, I know that one of its key tenets is the ability to embrace ambiguity. The most creative individuals thrive in the unknown, using it as fertile ground for innovation and exploration.
But here’s the truth: that’s the one area of creativity where I struggle the most. Maybe it’s my anxiety, but not knowing feels deeply uncomfortable for me. Ambiguity unsettles me, leaving me searching for answers and certainty when they aren’t always available.
So, when I saw a course being offered called Beauty in Ambiguity, I signed up without hesitation. I wanted to challenge myself to find peace—maybe even beauty—in the not-knowing. It was during the first session, when asked how I wanted to be remembered, that the unicorn metaphor came to me.
Rare, Serene, and Graceful
To me, being rare is about embracing your individuality and valuing your uniqueness. Just as unicorns are seen as one-of-a-kind, I want to be remembered as someone who contributed something distinct and meaningful to the world.
- Serenity: Amid the chaos of ambiguity, I value calmness and clarity. I aspire to be a calming presence, someone who helps others navigate uncertainty with grace.
- Grace: Life isn’t perfect, and neither are we. Grace is about moving forward despite the imperfections, staying kind and compassionate even in challenging times.
These values guide me to see ambiguity not as a threat but as a landscape of possibilities—a chance to make thoughtful, deliberate choices.
Brave, Stabby, and Protective
Of course, ambiguity isn’t always gentle. It can be messy and demanding, requiring us to take bold action when the situation calls for it.
- Bravery: I want to be remembered as someone unafraid to take risks or speak up when it matters. Ambiguity often demands courage, and I hope my actions inspire others to be brave too.
- Stabby (in the best way): The unicorn’s horn represents decisiveness and the ability to cut through confusion. I strive to bring clarity and focus, asking hard questions and challenging the status quo when necessary.
- Protectiveness: Lastly, I value being a protector—of people, ideas, and even my own boundaries. I want to foster safe spaces for others to grow while ensuring I have the energy to keep giving.
Finding Beauty in Ambiguity
The phrase Beauty in Ambiguity reminds us that the unknown can be beautiful if we approach it with curiosity and an open heart. It’s not about having all the answers but about finding meaning and purpose in the journey.
For me, the training reinforced something I’ve been learning all along: navigating ambiguity requires both grace and grit. It’s about balancing calm reflection with decisive action, and finding courage even when anxiety tells you otherwise.
When I think about how I want to be remembered, I hope people see someone who embraced ambiguity with the quiet strength of a unicorn—rare, serene, and graceful, yet ready to rise to the occasion with bravery and resolve when needed.
Living the Unicorn Values
Here’s how you can channel the unicorn mindset in your own life:
- Reflect on your values: What’s most important to you? How do you want to impact the world? Write it down, and let it guide your choices.
- Embrace the unknown: See ambiguity as an opportunity to explore, grow, and make meaningful contributions.
- Balance grace and grit: Stay calm and composed, but don’t be afraid to take decisive action when it’s necessary.
- Protect what matters: Set boundaries that honor your time, energy, and priorities while making space for others to thrive.
Your Unicorn Legacy
The questions from that training session still linger with me: How do you want to be remembered? For me, it’s as someone who saw beauty in ambiguity, who embraced the magic of the unknown, and who faced challenges with grace and grit.
What about you? What’s your unicorn legacy?
