A few months ago, I took a course from The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, Enchant, that discussed self-care through the lens of fairytales. Seriously, take everything Dr Sara Cleto and Dr Brittany Warman have to offer. They cover such a broad range of topics that will appeal to lovers of literature, magic, and history. Their workshops have me rethinking and applying several frameworks for making sense of life with new perspectives which is of course the epitome of creative living.

Fairytales have a way of revealing truths about our lives, weaving magic and metaphor to explore the human experience. One of the stories that was not mentioned I the course, but I think that holds surprising wisdom for modern self-care is The Princess and the Pea. While it might seem like a simple tale about royalty and sensitivity, this story resonates deeply when viewed through the lens of chronic conditions like fibromyalgia—or even just the everyday struggles of heightened sensitivity and the need for validation.

So I applied the ideas I learned in the course, what if we approached our own self-care through the lens of a fairytale? Here’s what I believe The Princess and the Pea can teach us about honoring our own needs and finding balance in a hectic world.

Heightened Sensitivity and the Pea of Discomfort

In the tale, the princess is so sensitive that a single pea under a towering stack of mattresses leaves her tossing and turning all night. For those of us who live with heightened sensitivity—whether it’s physical, emotional, or mental—this feels all too familiar. Minor irritations that others might ignore can weigh heavily on us, much like that hidden pea.

This is a reminder that self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all. What seems small to others might feel monumental to you, and that’s okay. You don’t have to apologize for your sensitivity. Instead, recognize it as your own “fairytale gift”—a unique perspective that allows you to deeply feel and experience the world around you.

Validation in an Invisible World

One of the most striking parallels between the princess and those dealing with invisible challenges like fibromyalgia is the quest for validation. The princess’s sensitivity is tested because no one believes her discomfort is real until it’s proven. Similarly, people living with chronic conditions often face skepticism when their pain or fatigue isn’t visible.

The lesson here? You don’t need anyone else to “test the pea” for you to know your truth. Your self-care practice starts with believing yourself. When you honor your own experiences and give yourself the grace to prioritize rest, nourishment, or quiet moments, you’re choosing to rewrite the story—not as someone waiting for validation, but as someone who claims it for themselves.

The Fairytale Power of Perseverance

Despite her sleepless night, the princess perseveres. She remains true to herself, and in the end, she’s celebrated for her unique sensitivity. This part of the story reminds us of the resilience required for self-care—especially when it feels like the world is stacking mattress after mattress over your metaphorical pea.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean you won’t face challenges. It means choosing to prioritize your well-being even when life’s layers seem to pile up. Sometimes, the most meaningful self-care is the quiet decision to listen to your body, mind, and spirit, even when no one else sees the weight you’re carrying.

Viewing Self-Care Through a Fairytale Lens

The beauty of fairytales is their timeless ability to hold up a mirror to our lives, transforming the mundane into the magical. Just as The Princess and the Pea teaches us about sensitivity, other fairytales can provide their own lessons in self-care:

  • Sleeping Beauty: The importance of rest and renewal.
  • Cinderella: The transformative power of asking for help and accepting support.
  • Beauty and the Beast: Seeing beauty in the imperfect and embracing self-love.

By reimagining self-care as a fairytale journey, we can approach it with creativity, grace, and a touch of magic. Whether it’s building small rituals that feel enchanting (like lighting a candle before journaling) or simply re-framing challenges as quests to overcome, this perspective makes self-care feel less like a chore and more like an adventure.

Write Your Own Happily Ever After

In your own story, you are both the hero and the author. Whether you’re dealing with chronic challenges, a hectic schedule, or the weight of a long to-do list, self-care isn’t about erasing the struggles. It’s about navigating them with intention and compassion.

So, let’s take a cue from the princess. Honor your sensitivity, listen to your inner voice, and don’t be afraid to adjust your “mattresses” to find comfort. Your self-care journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s—it just needs to be yours.

What fairytale speaks to your self-care story? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re writing your own happily ever after. ✨
