Today we are continuing with the lesson on mental health from the Star Wars universe, but today we are focusing on the concept of hope. Now, here is a look into how my brain works…yesterday was Star Wars Day and it doesn’t stop there because today is Revenge of the Fifth.

All weekend,I have been wearing my geeky Star Wars themed shirts. One of my absolute favorites is a shirt I bought from Colorful Geek that is a quote from Rogue One about hope. I also happened to be looking at their website the other night which is why the quote was foremost in my mind. Because I was thinking about hope, the phrase “hope is a thing with wings” has been on repeat in my head. This happens to not be the actual wording but this is how my brain forever remembers Emily Dickinson’s “hope is a thing with feathers.”

Somehow, my brain connected to the Dickinson quote (if albeit incorrectly) all starting from thinking about a t-shirt. I wanted to post something about Star Wars and I thought about how to tie into the Dickinson quote, but “hope is a thing with x-wings” just doesn’t sound right. But it did get me thinking about how hope can be connected to wellness and it is Mental Health Awareness Month! So today, we are continuing the discussion on mental health and Star Wars.

First, let’s take a look at hope. Hope is like a beacon in the darkness, guiding us through difficult times and motivating us to keep moving forward. In the realm of mental health and overall well-being, hope plays a crucial role for several reasons:

  1. Resilience: Hope fosters resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks and adversity. When individuals have hope, they are more likely to see challenges as temporary and surmountable rather than insurmountable obstacles.
  2. Motivation: Hope fuels motivation and goal-directed behavior. When people believe that their efforts can lead to positive outcomes, they are more likely to take action and persevere in the face of obstacles.
  3. Coping: Hope provides a coping mechanism during difficult times. It offers a sense of optimism and helps individuals maintain a positive outlook, even in the midst of adversity.
  4. Emotional Well-being: Hope is closely linked to emotional well-being. It can reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and despair, promoting a sense of inner peace and contentment.
  5. Physical Health: Research suggests that hope is associated with better physical health outcomes. Individuals with higher levels of hope tend to engage in healthier behaviors, such as exercise and seeking medical care when needed, which can contribute to overall well-being.
  6. Sense of Purpose: Hope gives people a sense of purpose and meaning in life. It provides a reason to strive for a better future and invest in personal growth and development.

Hope acts as a powerful psychological resource that can enhance mental health and overall well-being, enabling individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, optimism, and determination. There is transformative power in hope driving collective action and sparking movements for change.

Like the metaphor of the bird in Dickinson s poem, hope is something that is waiting to take flight in us all. Just as hope is vital for individual mental health and well-being, it is also essential for fostering resilience, unity, and progress on a larger scale within society.

We are entering the thick of political season which can cause a lot of worry, stress, and general unease. Just like in the Star Wars universe where the Republic thought they were initially on the side of the good guys, many in politics think they are acting on the side of the just when it comes to their political beliefs. Sometimes this can be because of a charismatic person driving the charge. It is important to not just listen to talking heads, but look into the issues. Who are those being affected by the decisions being made in Washington? Who is our Emperor Palpatine? What is our defining moment?

In the film Rogue One: a Star Wars Story, Jyn Erso uses hope as a rallying cry to action. The quote “rebellions are built on hope” encapsulates the idea that hope is not just a personal emotion, but a driving force for collective action and social change. Here is another look at the connection between hope and mental health, but through the lens of driving social change:

  1. Collective Resilience: Just as hope fosters resilience on an individual level, it also fuels resilience within communities and movements. In the context of a rebellion, hope becomes a unifying force that strengthens the resolve of individuals to fight against oppression or injustice, despite the odds stacked against them.
  2. Motivating Collective Action: Hope motivates collective action by inspiring people to come together and work towards a common goal. In the face of tyranny or adversity, the belief in a better future gives individuals the courage to stand up and take action, even when the risks are high.
  3. Coping with Injustice: In a society plagued by injustice or oppression, hope serves as a coping mechanism for marginalized or oppressed groups. It offers them the strength and resilience to persevere in their struggle for justice, even when faced with daunting obstacles.
  4. Creating Change: Hope is a catalyst for social change. It empowers individuals to challenge the status quo and envision a more just and equitable society. Rebellions, whether literal or metaphorical, are often fueled by the belief that change is possible and that a better future is within reach.

In essence, the quote from Rogue One underscores the transformative power of hope in driving collective action and sparking movements for change. Just as hope is vital for individual mental health and well-being, it is also essential for fostering resilience, unity, and progress on a larger scale within society.

So on today’s Revenge of the Fifth (May 5th), I encourage you to take a look at the issues and make sure that you are registered to vote in the upcoming election. Just as Jyn Erso says, “rebellions are built on hope” and you could sit there and stew on the unfairness of the world or you can do something positive and take action. Not sure where you stand in the world of party politics? Well, just remember only the Sith deal in absolutes.
