I’ll admit it—I’m a sucker for those quirky, seemingly random holidays that pop up on social media. You know the ones: National Donut Day (first Friday in June), Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19), or International Left-Handers Day(August 13). They might not get you a day off work, but they do bring a little unexpected joy to the everyday. And honestly, isn’t that something we could all use a bit more of?
Take National Mutt Day (July 31 and December 2), for example. That’s right—it’s so great, we get to celebrate it twice a year! This lighthearted holiday honors mixed-breed dogs—the scrappy, lovable, one-of-a-kind pups who don’t fit neatly into a kennel club category but have 100% of your heart.

National Mutt Day is more than just a reason to post cute photos (though I’m all for that). It’s also a call to action: to consider adopting a dog from a shelter, to recognize the value of every animal—pedigree or not—and to remind ourselves that the best things in life are often a little unexpected. Like that dog who might have the ears of a terrier, the body of a lab, and the zoomies of a caffeine-fueled kangaroo.
But it’s not just about dogs. These “silly” holidays give us permission to pause, smile, and celebrate something offbeat. They can spark conversations, create moments of connection, and bring some much-needed levity to our packed calendars.

Go ahead—wear mismatched socks on National Opposite Day (January 25). Make your favorite childhood sandwich for National Peanut Butter & Jelly Day (April 2). And on July 31, give an extra treat to your mutt (or the one next door). Because in a world that can often feel heavy, joy doesn’t always have to come from big, serious occasions. Sometimes, it shows up with a wagging tail and a made-up holiday hashtag.
