Turning 45 feels like standing at the midpoint between who you were and who you’re becoming. So, in honor of my birthday this year, I decided to reflect on some of the lessons I’ve learned—about creativity, about life, and about what it really means to be Not Quite Superhuman. Some are serious. Some are silly. All are mine. Maybe one or two will resonate with you, too.

- Creativity isn’t a talent. It’s a muscle. Use it.
- Perfection is the enemy of done—and of joy.
- Small, consistent steps beat bursts of brilliance every time.
- The first draft is never the final answer.
- Art doesn’t have to be good to be good for you.
✨ Sometimes the messiest pages are the most honest ones.
- Show up. That’s the real magic.
- Sometimes, your brain needs a nap, not a breakthrough.
- Not all productivity is visible.
- Creativity counts even if no one claps.
- Try the thing. You can always edit later.
💡 You can’t improve what doesn’t exist—make the first version terrible on purpose.
- Some of the best ideas come while doing the dishes.
- Your voice matters, even if it trembles.
- Morning pages work—but so does doodling during lunch.
- You don’t need permission to make something beautiful.
🎨 Beauty made just for you still counts.
- Rest is productive.
- Burnout isn’t solved by pushing harder.
- Boundaries are brave.
- There’s power in saying, “This is enough for today.”
- You are not too old to start.
🕰 The time will pass anyway. Might as well try.
- Embrace the season you’re in, creatively and personally.
- Rituals ground us more than routines.
- Creativity blooms after boredom. Give yourself space to be still.
- A messy notebook is a sign of a busy, curious mind.
- It’s okay to leave a project unfinished.
🌀 Not everything has to be a masterpiece or a legacy project.
- Even your weirdest ideas have a place.
- Comparison steals the spark.
- Choose outfits that match your mood—not the dress code.
- Wearing fun earrings counts as self-expression.
- Aesthetics are a form of nourishment.
🧁 Beauty feeds the soul. Yes, even your Pinterest board.
- A little whimsy goes a long way.
- Adulting is hard. Color-coded calendars help.
- You’re allowed to reinvent yourself. Often.
- You don’t have to turn your hobby into a side hustle.
- You don’t need a label to claim your creativity.
🏷 Call yourself whatever you need to feel brave today.
- Let wonder be your guide more than worry.
- Your childhood self had it right: make, explore, pretend.
- What you create today might help someone tomorrow.
- Ugly cries are part of the process.
- The fear of starting is usually worse than the thing itself.
💭 Sometimes the scariest thing is just showing up. Do it scared.
- Self-doubt will show up. Invite it in, but don’t let it steer.
- If you wait until the chaos ends, you’ll never create.
- Celebrate progress, not perfection.
- You are allowed to be a masterpiece and a work in progress.
🖌 That’s the sweet spot where the magic happens.
- Kindness is a creative superpower.
- Being Not Quite Superhuman means choosing to show up anyway.
💫 And that’s more than enough.
Just because you’ve reached midlife doesn’t mean you need to have it all figured out—or be perfect. In fact, it means something better: knowing what truly matters, releasing what doesn’t, and making space for joy, curiosity, and creativity, one beautifully imperfect step at a time.
If any of these lessons resonated with you, I’d love to hear what this season of life has taught you. Let’s celebrate together—share your own wisdom in the comments or pass this along to someone who might need a gentle creative nudge today.
