Yes, I am still pondering the lessons from the Enchant course that I took last month. One of the concepts was body lore and the connection it has to costumes. In the intricate tapestry of human existence, the threads of mythology, folklore, and personal narrative are woven together to create a rich tapestry of culture and identity. At the heart of this tapestry lies the concept of body lore—the myriad ways in which the human body serves as a canvas for storytelling, symbolism, and self-expression. From ancient myths to modern fairytales, body lore has played a central role in shaping our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

I have long been a proponent of starting each day by getting fully dressed as if I will run into everyone I know…even if I have no plans on leaving the actual house. Part of this is because what we wear has impacts on our mental health. We can gain confidence through a certain color or a particular article of clothing that makes us feel strong or elegant. In a way, this is like putting on a costume to help us face the day.
One of the most captivating manifestations of body lore is the tradition of wearing costumes. Whether donned for festive celebrations, theatrical performances, or playful escapades, costumes have a unique ability to transport us to different realms of imagination and possibility. But beyond their aesthetic allure, costumes hold a profound significance in the journey towards self-discovery and confidence.
Imagine, for a moment, stepping into the shoes of a legendary hero or heroine, adorned in regal attire and armed with courage and conviction. This act of metamorphosis, this embodiment of a larger-than-life persona, is more than just make-believe—it is a transformative experience that empowers us to embrace our inner strengths and aspirations. Just as actors on a stage inhabit characters when wearing costumes, we, too, can channel the essence of our most confident selves by donning metaphorical costumes of our own creation.
I have to admit that the idea of putting on a persona had me thinking of masking and how those that are neurodivergent will sometimes mask their emotions. For those on the autism spectrum, masking entails concealing one’s true identity and adapting to neurotypical norms—a practice that can exact a heavy toll on mental health and well-being. Even in the face of such challenges, the act of masking reveals a fundamental truth about human resilience: the capacity to shape-shift, to adapt, and to find strength in vulnerability. Life is hard and so we find ways to try and navigate it.
But how does wearing a metaphorical costume translate into newfound confidence? The answer lies in the power of imagination and self-perception. By envisioning ourselves as the heroes of our own stories, we can transcend the limitations of self-doubt and insecurity. Through the lens of body lore, we gain access to a vast arsenal of archetypes and symbols—each offering a pathway to self-discovery and empowerment.
Consider the role-playing aspect of wearing a metaphorical costume. Just as children delight in assuming the identities of their favorite characters, adults, too, can benefit from this playful form of self-expression. By embracing different roles and personas, we unlock hidden reservoirs of courage, creativity, and resilience—qualities that lie dormant within us, waiting to be unleashed.
Moreover, wearing a metaphorical costume grants us permission to experiment—to explore the depths of our own identity without fear of judgment or rejection. In the theater of self-discovery, there are no rules, no boundaries—only endless possibilities waiting to be explored. Through trial and error, we uncover the facets of ourselves that resonate most deeply, cultivating a sense of authenticity and confidence that radiates from within.
The costume you wear doesn’t even have to truly be a costume. Just as I mentioned wearing certain colors, the true importance is what it signifies to you. It doesn’t even have to be something outlandish or even overtly a costume. Have you ever heard of Disney Bound? The idea originated from the rule that adults were not allowed to wear costumes on the Disney parks. So to get around this rule, people began to curate outfits using normal clothing that signified their favorite character. Before I heard of Disney Bound, I referred to this as Covert Cosplay. No one needs to know you are wearing a costume. All that matters is that you do.

In the end, body lore and costumes offer us a portal to the realm of infinite potential—a realm where our wildest dreams and aspirations take flight. As we navigate the labyrinth of existence, let us remember the transformative power of imagination, the resilience of the human spirit, and the boundless depths of self-discovery that await us on this extraordinary journey called life.
