Perhaps it is ironic that my TEDTalk on psychological safety scared me right up to the point where I finished and walked off stage. However, it was a bucket list item and I am very glad I did it…even though it made me want to possibly pass out…the truth is, we sometimes need to do things that scare us.

When we think about bucket lists, we often envision exciting adventures and fulfilling experiences. But what if I told you that the most powerful bucket lists are the ones that make your heart race and your palms sweat? Yes, that’s right – your bucket list should scare you. Stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing fear is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. Creativity after all is all about taking risks and chances.

  1. Fear as a Catalyst for Growth:
Fear is often seen as a negative emotion, something to be avoided at all costs. However, fear can also be a powerful catalyst for growth and transformation. When we step outside of our comfort zones and face our fears head-on, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and opportunities for personal development. Whether it’s traveling to a foreign country alone, starting a new business venture, learning a new skill, or giving a TEDtalk, the things that scare us the most are often the ones that have the potential to bring about the most profound growth.
  2. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs:
Many of the things that scare us are rooted in limiting beliefs and self-imposed barriers. By confronting our fears and pushing past these limitations, we challenge ourselves to expand our horizons and reach new heights. As we accomplish the goals that once seemed out of reach, we gain confidence in our abilities and develop a greater sense of self-efficacy.
  3. Living a Life of Purpose and Passion:
It’s easy to fall into the trap of complacency and routine, sticking to the familiar and comfortable paths in life. However, true fulfillment lies in pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones and pursuing our passions with courage and conviction. When we embrace fear and actively pursue the things that scare us, we tap into a deeper sense of purpose and passion, leading to a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
  4. Embracing Resilience and Adaptability:
Life is unpredictable, and we will inevitably face challenges and obstacles along the way. By embracing fear and stepping outside of our comfort zones, we develop the resilience and adaptability needed to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and courage. Each time we confront our fears and push past our limitations, we become stronger and more resilient individuals.
  5. Creating Lasting Memories and Experiences:
Some of the most memorable and transformative experiences in life are the ones that initially scared us the most. Whether it’s skydiving from a plane, climbing a mountain, or giving a public speech, the rush of adrenaline and sense of accomplishment that comes from facing our fears head-on creates lasting memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

While it’s natural to feel apprehensive about stepping outside of your comfort zone, it’s important to remember that growth and fulfillment lie on the other side of fear. So don’t be afraid to dream big and create a bucket list that scares you. Embrace fear as a catalyst for growth, challenge your limiting beliefs, and step boldly into the unknown. Your future self will thank you for it.
