One of my favorite motivational speakers is Mel Robbins. Her 5 Second Rule is life changing and so simple. The premise of her idea is that we don’t get stuff done because we are not motivated enough. However, if we start a countdown in our head, it triggers our activation energy and our brain gets excited. By the time we get to one, we are off our butts and doing whatever it is that we were procrastinating on.
Check out her TEDTalk:
The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins is like a quick jolt of motivation for your everyday decisions. Imagine you’re faced with a moment of hesitation or self-doubt – whether it’s tackling a daunting task, making a phone call, or starting a new project. Instead of getting bogged down by overthinking, you can use the 5-Second Rule to propel yourself into action.
Here’s how it works: the moment you feel that hesitation creeping in, count down from five to one – 5-4-3-2-1 – and then take action. It’s like a mental nudge that interrupts those negative thought patterns and activates your decision-making brainpower.
Mel argues that this simple technique is a game-changer. By counting down and taking immediate action, you bypass the doubts and fears that often hold you back. It’s not just about making decisions; it’s about breaking the cycle of procrastination and building confidence through consistent, small steps.
Think of it as your personal tool to overcome the mental hurdles that can hinder progress. Whether you’re aiming to boost productivity, enhance your work, or simply seize the day, the 5-Second Rule is like a friendly push to get things done. It’s a practical approach to building courage and taking charge of your life, one countdown at a time.
I listen to Mel so much that my husband can recognize her voice when I am listening to a podcast or audiobook. He calls her the lawyer. Since I first watched this video, I have tried applying the 5-Second Rule in my own life. It really does work. Some examples have been taking care of housework like folding laundry or loading the dishwasher. Sometimes I will plan on just folding one basket, but once I get started, I just keep going.
What I really like about listening to this particular TEDtalk is that Mel’s style keeps you invested in listening. There is a part from the 20min version of her talk that has you thinking she is referring to a four letter word that starts with “f”. Nope, not the one you are thinking of! That is what I love. She is memorable and has an approach that helps the information stick in your head. It is no wonder that her talk is one of the most watched.
Did I mention there is a book? Of course there is a book! It seems like every TEDTalk I find particularly interesting has a book to go along with it. I love the idea of pairing the media snippet with a longer explanation on the concept outlined in the talk. *Hint* If you are a publisher reading this, yes, I would be interested in turning my TEDtalk into a book after February.
