Ever wondered why names hold so much power in our lives? It’s not just about having a label to call someone or something by—it’s about the deeper impact that naming has on identity, perception, and significance. I am admittedly bad when it comes to names. Honestly, I am very self-conscious about it which I think exasperates the problem even further since I worry about it to the point of making it worse. My short term memory is not the best, so I tend to forget names. When I do remember, sometimes my brain turns them into agglomerations of their true form.

Truthfully, I know what it is like to have someone say my name wrong. You wouldn’t think with one of the most popular names from the latter part of the 20th century (i.e. Jennifer) that it would be an issue. It is Jen with one “N” and never Jenny. So for many years I went by the full Jennifer. Even then, I have been Jasper, Jersey, Jenifer, and Ifer. Even Hopwood has been tuned many a times into Hoppy, Hopgood, Hopwell, and more. Though still much better than the butchering of my of Italian-origin maiden name. I make it easy for people now, simply call me Dr Jen.
